HP Reveals Post-Acquisition Plans for Autonomy

Last summer, when HP gave up on smartphones to place a $10.3 billion bet on semantic-search company Autonomy, then-CEO Leo Apotheker's bold plan was to create a new kind of enterprise search-enabled content management. Today, under new CEO Meg Whitman, the company revealed some of the fruits of that acquisition, including support for the Hadoop big-data file system and a new product intended to help marketing folks better understand who uses their websites.

The killer app for big data, according to HP ? and thus for Autonomy ? is consumer sentiment analytics: the ability to glean from the Web's enormous collection of textual communication the gist of what buyers are saying about a given product or service. And HP isn't the only one moving in this direction. Recently, SAP has recast its HANA in-memory database system as an analytics tool. Radian6 has launched its cloud-based service from Salesforce's cloud, and startups have been trying to eke out space for themselves, as well.

Pop IDOL

In this context, Autonomy's crown jewel is a system called Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL), which is a deeply rooted semantic network. Unlike Google, whose indexing is based on pattern-matching coupled with categorical contextualization, IDOL is a network of weighted associations between passages of text ascertained to have similar meanings. In fact, back when it was autonomous, Autonomy's management marketed IDOL as "the meaning network."

Based on today's announcements, HP's plan for the analytics space now looks something like this: Rather than rely on simple database queries and transforms that comprise the nucleus of an in-memory database, Autonomy will market IDOL as a data discovery tool for researching and ascertaining the meaning of big data as it's being collected. To ensure Autonomy's connection to big data, HP also announced it will support the Hadoop file system. Reflecting the many mergers and amalgamations that culminated in this product, the result is being called (are you ready?) HP Autonomy Optimost Clickstream Analytics.

Autonomy acquired Promote Multichannel Technology in 2007, giving it a foothold in social media and consumer interactions. The new HP plan puts the man in charge of this division - Andrew Joiner, whose title remains CEO of Autonomy Promote - in the point position. In an interview with ReadWriteWeb, Joiner said that what distinguishes Clickstream from its in-memory competition like SAP HANA and VMware SQLFire are the way it ascertains the meanings behind unstructured data and places a value on those meanings - value that may be helpful in making important real-world assessments.

"Imagine if you're a Wall Street firm, and you're communicating with customers, subject to a whole host of regulations and corporate [policies]. If you're trying to assess your risk, you cannot only look at the structure side of the equation," Joiner says. "Just because someone sends 50 messages more than another person doesn't necessarily mean that individual has more risk. You have to look at a combination of things: Potentially that person's sending them late at night, and they're a registered person, and they're talking about these types of topics, calling me on a nonreported line, calling me on my personal cell phone - that's a measure of risk. So you have to look at when that person [talks] and who that person is, but then combine that with the topics of the information that are contained in that email, which is the human-friendly information. The combination gives you an assessment of risk."

We've seen use cases in which a system ascertains which customers are making the most revealing comments about a product through Twitter or Facebook. But this is something else, which is why Joiner's product purview has been described using the word "surveillance." Is the information you're reading about a company in which your firm has a significant investment actionable? IDOL is designed to answer questions like that.

In a case like this, Joiner says, businesses want to be able to ascertain the relative value of the information they receive based on the behavior of the people providing that information.  "What are they interested in today?  What have they shared with me today? Can I leverage that information to make my website, the [phone] call with me, my engagement with social media more personalized, dynamic and relevant?"

Who Develops the Analytics Reports?

Will there be applications that Clickstream Analytics users will be able to use right out of the box (to borrow a phrase from the days when software came in boxes) that will enable enterprises whose data is already stored using Hadoop to generate meaningful analyses?

"Because it's geared towards marketers, we tried to remove a lot of the technical orientation," Joiner says. "In other words, we're trying to ensure that, from a deployment perspective, it can be done in the cloud, and they can get up-and-running with clicking and tracking very quickly." There are a few components involved, he continues. One is called the universal tracker, which is used on websites to track user activity. That activity is stored within the HP Vertica infrastructure (which is part of yet another HP acquisition). That information by itself will be enough to generate results using raw data. From there, he goes on, the analytics application answers some of the most difficult questions immediately.

"For instance, we'd like to have a better understanding of who is coming to your website - not what they're doing or what they're actually clicking on, but who those individuals are. We're taking socio-demographic information about your users - behavior that we can learn. What are they reading on the page? That information then becomes part of the corpus of analysis, so you can ask simple questions of [what will make] your website more dynamic and more personable... the real questions that you're trying to ask, that traditional structured analytics can't tell you."

But what is it about the quality of Clickstream's analysis that renders the speed advantage of an in-memory database moot? "Essentially what an in-memory database gives you is a simpler answer, faster," the division CEO says. "There are a couple of things that give those types of [in-memory] platforms a lot of difficulty. One, they're not capable of dealing with audio or video or the rich forms of information that are out there - a whole class of information that exists in rich media, that they're not able to analyze. They can't tell you what customers are calling about in the contact center, they can't tell you what they're sharing in a social channel that includes video. Secondly, if the data is changing - and that's frequently what's happening in social media - to have to structure that information and write explicit queries against it, you're simply going to miss the insights. You have to have something that naturally, statistically derives the meaning of that information such that you can continue to ask the evolving questions."

The Information-Centered Economy

So from Andrew Joiner's perspective, has HP's mission for Autonomy changed - perhaps been fine-tuned since the tumult at the top replaced Leo Apotheker with Meg Whitman? "I believe the macro-vision hasn't and shouldn't change. For the past 30 or 40 years, we've only been focused on the technology side of the equation. And rightfully so - we've had nine evolutionary changes from mainframes to client/server to PCs to mobile and cloud. But if you look at where we're going in the next 30 to 40 years, it's going to be driven around information. The ability to derive and understand information is going to be your source of competitive advantage."

He discussed the rapid evolution within organizations of professionals whose entire job function is the examination and analysis of information - including in the sales department analyzing customers, in the marketing department assessing social media activity, and in the legal department analyzing corporate policies and international regulations and variations on risk. "You have throughout your organization a tremendous amount of individuals dealing with information, and it's a source of advantage if you can process it effectively. I don't believe that macro-vision has changed.  What's changed is, HP now has all the components to actually deliver that promise of information."

The Primordial Anxiety, Creativity & The Purpose of Life

Most people would agree that anxiety is unpleasant and we can become anxious for many reasons. But when we do it is usually the result of two, emotional drives that motivate us towards or away from certain people, places and things we encounter during the course of our lives. Desire and Fear. However, desire and fear, and the anxiety they cause, are important and sometimes necessary human feelings. The latter can keep us safe from harm the former can bring meaning and purpose to our lives.

SpaceX Dragon Returns Safely to Earth

After completing every objective of its nine-day mission, the first private spacecraft ever to dock with the International Space Station splashed down off the coast of Baja California today. The landing was right on target. The 19-foot-long SpaceX Dragon capsule was quickly recovered to begin its trip back to the SpaceX facility in McGregor, Texas. SpaceX's successful mission sets the stage for private spacecraft operations to take over some routine responsibilities from NASA, potentially saving money and increasing capabilities.

The Dragon launched on May 22 aboard the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket to make its historic rendezvous, successfully docking with the space station on May 25. The following day, the crew of ISS Expedition 31 opened the hatch and climbed aboard, reporting that the Dragon's interior "smell[ed] like a brand new car."

The Dragon brought some nonessential cargo to the station, which the crew unloaded and replaced with spent equipment to return to NASA. The agency has made Dragon's full cargo manifest available to read. It includes crew provisions and clothes, racks and storage containers for science experiments, plus some mission hardware, including spacewalk gloves.

After completing all the tests and experiments, Dragon spent its last day at the station yesterday as crew finished loading its 1,455 pounds of cargo to return to Earth. Dragon unberthed from the station's robotic arm at 4:05 a.m. Eastern time today.

Dragon fired its engines to slow down and drop from orbit, then streaked through the sky over the Pacific, deploying its parachutes at 45,000 feet and touching down right on target at 11:42 a.m. Eastern time.

In future missions, Dragon will land on a pad using precision thrusters, rather than the more traditional water landing.

With the success of this mission, SpaceX begins a series of cargo missions for NASA under a four-year, $1.6 billion contract. If all goes well, private spaceflight companies will take on even more responsibility. The Dragon capsule is designed to accommodate up to seven crew members, and SpaceX plans to begin manned flights within three years.

With private companies like SpaceX handling routine flights, NASA can free up its resources for more ambitious, longer-term missions.

When at the checkout at the supermarket, do you smile and greet the person behind the counter. 2012 Miller Motorsports Park World Superbikes Saturday: Rain and Wind

Miller Motorsports Park in the US took the role of high altitude track off South Africa's Kyalami, providing racing against a backdrop of spectacular mountains with the thinner air sapping power off the bikes like no other track on the calendar.

The race is held on Monday, instead of the usual Sunday, to give the US fans three days of Memorial Day holiday weekend packed with AMA Pro and World Superbike races. The World Supersport championship doesn't race this weekend.

For the last three years, whoever did the double at Miller won the title, and last year that was Carlos Checa who has been quick throughout qualifying. Max Biaggi and Tom Sykes, the men leading the championship, did not fare as well today, with Biaggi only managing four laps in the morning's waterlogged free practice session and Sykes crashing halfway through the windy qualifying session in the afternoon. Jakub Smrz was fastest when it was wet and fastest again when it was dry, showing us, as he does almost every weekend, that the man can qualify. Biaggi did make up for his poor morning session with a decent fourth place, ahead of the Ducatis of Davide Giugliano and Sylvain Guintoli, but behind Marco Melandri's BMW.

Lies, Damn Lies, And Manufacturer HP Figures: Repsol Introduces Honda's "230 hp" RC213V

One of the burning questions among race fans since the reintroduction of the 1000cc MotoGP machines has been exactly how much horsepower the bigger bikes make. Various figures have been bandied about, some issued in press releases, others bandied about by riders, or measured on the notoriously inaccurate press room dyno. The numbers so far have included 250 horsepower for Karel Abraham's Ducati Desmosedici GP12, in a press release issued by his Cardion AB team, the press room guestimate of 280hp for the Ducati GP12, and Casey Stoner suggesting at Estoril that his bike had 85 horsepower more than the 190 horsepower 500cc two strokes.

To these numbers can be added another, this time coming from the Repsol Media Service, in a press release discussing the Honda RC213V that the Repsol Honda team is campaigning. Honda's 1000cc MotoGP bike produces "approximately 230 HP", the press release confidently states, 20 hp more than Honda's 800cc machine and 10 hp less than the 990cc RC211V, widely regarded as one of the greatest racing motorcycles ever built. The figure of 230 horsepower seems very low, although it is probably as wide of the mark as some of the estimates of 280+ horsepower being bandied about in the media center.

Jump Into The Motivational Hole

If you've ever finished something big, whether it's you've written a book, finished school, quit your job, created a video game or finished anything else that previously would take up a huge part of your time and now does not anymore, you might know this situation: Even though you might have had big plans for how to fill your days you just can't motivate yourself to do anything. You feel a bit confused, maybe go through a lot of emotions. You feel most content when you're just resting and taking time off. If you try to be "productive" you get distracted easily and you have a hard time getting into the creative flow. You wonder what's wrong with you and maybe beat yourself up because you feel like you're wasting time. This is not your normal state of being but started after you've finished your last big project. What's going on?

Why Facebook Just Launched Its Own Instagram

Just a month after announcing its plans to devour hit app Instagram to the tune of $1 billion, Facebook has released its very own photo sharing app. But is two a crowd?

Camera, Facebook's brand new photo sharing app, is built to do precisely the same thing as its wildly popular stepsister, but it feeds directly into Facebook rather than into Instagram's walled garden, population 40 million and growing. It may not officially have Instagram DNA, but Facebook Camera offers up a palette of 14 filters to please any budding mobile photog, though they sport more literal labels ("Neon" and "Golden") than in Instagram's own moody toolkit.

Tinker with your photo (you know you want to crop it into a square, go ahead), apply a filter to set the tone, tag a friend and send it straight to Facebook. Like Instagram photos on Facebook, it'll appear on your Timeline at full-width - and fast. Facebook Camera, which was built independently of Kevin Systrom and co., runs circles around the regular Facebook app in terms of speed and navigability. If you mainly use Facebook to share photos with friends, Facebook Camera is a sleek, lightweight way to beam your pictures to the social network - but it's no Instagram.

Or Is It?

Facebook Camera takes more than a few cues from the photo sharing service we all know and love, but it's got a leg up with that whole 90-plus-million-strong active userbase. But why did Facebook make its very own Instagram at all? Facebook has been building this app for the better part of a year, since well before it successfully put the moves on Instagram. In fact, at least some photo filter features were ready to roll last August, according to engineers involved with the project.

Facebook couldn't just sit on its hands while Instafever spread like so much Toaster-tinted wildfire. As the company made a move for the photo sharing app, it was smart to develop its own in parallel - it certainly has the resources to do so. Facebook Camera was insurance that the king of social won't look like a lumbering giant next to the hot photo filtering craze that has all the social media whippersnappers in a tizzy. Instagram innovated, and gave us something we didn't know we needed until there we were, huddled over an iPhone screen tweaking a teensy square photo with the zeal of a less digital artist. As ReadWriteWeb Editor-at-Large Dan Frommer puts it, "Facebook bought Instagram because it?s doing something new and different that?s special; because it represented the biggest existing threat to Facebook." It wanted to assure us that, as the true sovereign of social, it can meet the evolving needs of its vast kingdom - there's no need to let our eyes wander.

Is Facebook's new app Insta-redundant? The polished little in-house photo app - which was developed independently of the Instagram team - must have been burning a hole in Facebook's pocket. And the company might as well siphon off Instagrammers while it watches the clock - they'll all end up in the same place anyhow.

Beyond Instagram, Facebook Camera also throws some elbows in the direction of Google+'s slick photo features. Google+ is still floundering when it comes to engaging users, but the site has a dedicated base of photogs who enjoy tools like Instant Upload and the large lightbox photo view, which Facebook mixed into its own recipe in February.

Camera isn't Facebook's only spinoff app. Last year it released Messenger, another service that serves its purpose far better than the Facebook app itself. Just like with the ill-fated Pool Party and the advent of Google+, there likely isn't room for two.

It's hard to say what Facebook will do with its new set of photo sharing nesting dolls. Once the Instagram buy goes through (assuming it's smooth sailing), the social giant will have the choice of integrating the two, or deep sixing one altogether. And after Instagram's loyalist outcry, it'd be wise to handle both the popular product and the brand with kid gloves. May the best-loved app win.
