Are We Alone in the Universe?
Huge excitement last week. Two Earth-size planets found orbiting a sun-like star less than a thousand light-years away. This comes two weeks after the stunning announcement of another planet orbiting another star at precisely the right distance — within the “habitable zone” that is not too hot and not too cold — to allow for liquid water and therefore possible life.Unfortunately, the planets of the right size are too close to their sun, and thus too scorching hot, to permit Earth-like life. And the Goldilocks planet in the habitable zone is too large....
Automatic File Conversions and More with Dropbox Automator
Computers keep getting closer and closer to making people obsolete. The latest step towards human obsolescence? Dropbox Automator, a Web-based tool for setting up actions that happen as soon as you put a file in a Dropbox folder. It’s not flawless just yet, but it might provide a useful service for many Dropbox users.
The service is powered by Wappwolf, an online “action store” that features a set of Web actions that can process files. For example, it has ready made actions to encrypt and decrypt files, extract text from PDFs, convert documents to PDF, generate QR codes and manipulate images.
Dropbox Automator
The Dropbox Automator works by connecting to your Dropbox account and then defining actions based on which folder you place files into. For example, I connected my Dropbox account and created a folder called Appwolf. Then I defined actions to convert files placed into that folder into PDFs.
You can also do things like upload files to Slideshare, sign PDFs, scrape PDFs to text files and even translate files automatically using Bing Translator. It looks like much of Automator’s functionality just comes from tapping into Web-based services.
You can also automatically upload photos to Facebook or Flickr, add a bug (stamp) to a photo, resize or rotate photos and much more.
A Few Glitches
I found that the service isn’t entirely glitch free. It says that it can covert HTML files to PDF, which it does… but it just converts the text to PDF, so the tags are presented in the document instead of used for formatting. It might be that you need the header information before the service (conf2pdf properly recognizes the file as HTML instead of plain text.
When Dropbox Automator zips files, it uses a format that doesn’t seem to be recognized on Mac OS X as a zip file. At least not by the Archive Utility that comes with OS X Lion.
Converting Files Using Dropbox AutomatorIt does convert OpenDocument Format (ODF) files OK, when it actually converts them. Of two ODF files I placed in the Appwolf directory, only one was converted. The other was placed in the processed folder that Dropbox Automator creates, but no PDF ever materialized.
But it’s a brand new service and I suspect they’re still shaking the bugs out. The service, at least for now, is free. How will they make their money? It’s unclear, but some of the actions you set up for files may cost money. So it’s possible that the developers will add premium services or charge a fee to other services for connecting users. If it catches on, I do hope that they start providing paid accounts so users can support the service.
DiscussHow U.S. Spy Satellite Mapped Soviet Union
Here's your mission, should you choose to accept it: build a camera that can take high-resolution photographs of the Earth from orbit and return them to the Central Intelligence Agency. There's only one catch: you don't get to use a computer or a single kilobyte of network bandwidth. That's the task that the United States government gave to a group of engineers at the optical instruments company Perkin-Elmer in Danbury, Connecticut at the height of the Cold War. It was October 1966 and the new development of the new satellite system, Hexagon, was underway. The project was a...

Namecheap Pokes Go Daddy over SOPA with $1 EFF Donations
Domain registrar Go Daddy's support for the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) was the last straw for many of its already disgruntled customers. After a Reddit-powered boycott sparked a mass exodus, the registrar tried to backpedal. Go Daddy has been removed from the official list of SOPA supporters, but the damage was done. Thousands of domains have since been moved to other registrars.
Namecheap, one of Go Daddy's shrewd competitors, has taken advantage of the situation by announcing Move Your Domain Day on December 29. The announcement doesn't call out Go Daddy by name, noting only that "some of our competitors support SOPA." Namecheap unequivocally does not. On December 29, using the coupon code SOPASucks, Namecheap will allow transfers at $6.99 each. For every transfer on that day, Namecheap will donate $1 to the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
SOPA (full text) is a bill backed by major media companies and opposed by tech giants. It will force ISPs, search providers, payment processors and advertisers to bend to the will of copyright holders by pretending infringing sites don't exist on the Internet. It's not even the only bill in Congress right now trying to give the entertainment industry the right to reshape the Internet to protect its business interests.
Our Dan Rowinski wrote a comprehensive guide to what you need to know about SOPA. We also have an infographic and video about the effects of the bill.
Since SOPA first arrived on the scene, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has been fighting it. By donating to the EFF, Namecheap shows that its opposition to SOPA is about more than snatching Go Daddy's customers.
Will you move your domains off of Go Daddy on December 29?

Kindle Fire Loaded With "Pre-Alpha" Version of Android Ice Cream Sandwich
The hackers at XDA Developers have been hard at work trying to port Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich onto the Android Kindle Fire. The first success was made in early December when a limited version of ICS was run on the Fire. Last week there was a breakthrough in what the XDA coders are calling a "pre-alpha" of the fire running an actual version of the newest Android OS. See the video below.
The newest hack of Ice Cream Sandwich on Kindle Fire is based off of CyanogenMod 9. According to the XDA Developer Forums, CyanogenMod 9 is not all that fundamentally different from the standard the stock edition of Android Open Source Project (AOSP) Ice Cream Sandwich. That does not mean to say that CyanogenMod 9 will not fork away from ICS and bring additions to the custom ROM, but for now there is little different in the code bases.
XDA developer JackpotClavin released the "pre-alpha" last week and the XDA community has been building off it since. Previous work on bringing ICS to the fire was done by an XDA member know as g1011999 who has made significant progress.
There are still several bugs to work out of Android 4.0 on the Fire. Wi-Fi is working (the all-important first step) while video playback and some audio are not yet working. That is significant progress for the project that had stalled (in terms of updates) through the middle of the month.
The work of g1011999 was built from CyanogenMod 7. Prerequisites for building ICS on the Fire include installing custom software such as CM7 or TWRP 2.0 after rooting the tablet. Then perform a factory wipe of the device and install JackpotClavin's work.
Currently the biggest obstacle is getting the SD card to save files from the device. That has been the most recent fix but still remains a work in progress.
Here is a video of ICS running on the Fire.
To follow the discussion on XDA discussion boards, see this thread based on JackpotClavin's pre-alpha launch. The thread was split from this thread that details the work done by g1011999. The IRC associated with ICS on the Fire is located at irc.freenode.net/#kindlefire-dev. To learn more about CyanogenMod 9, see the company's blog here or join the CyanogenMod forums here.
As this is a "pre-alpha" the current build of ICS on the Fire is not really ready for public consumption at this time. If developers want to help in the work of bringing ICS to the Fire, go jump into the XDA Forums or the IRC and volunteer your expertise.
